Vientiane and other parts of Laos have been hit by flooding from the Mekong river. The flooding in Vientiane is reported to be the worse since 1923. I remember once asking my work colleagues if it ever floods in Vientiane. They told me that it rarely floods, but about forty years ago there was a very bad flood and the water came up to armpit level where our office is.

Laos seems to have been relatively fortunate in avoiding natural disasters in its recent history, which probably means their disaster management capacity is not very strong.

I’ve tried to look for news through google but can’t find very much. A friend has posted some pictures of Vientiane but its hard to see much except for the food stalls by the river under water. The Mekong river must be immense right now.
